A string of bank robberies are taking place across the country, and Sarah and Elizabeth must work fast in order to figure out who's behind them and stop the streak before it happens in New York.
2 Weeks Earlier:
Sarah Boris, a successful con woman, is about to finish a four-year prison sentence after being convicted of bond forgery, when she stages an elaborate prison break. Special Agent Elizabeth Carter, the woman who captured Sarah four years earlier, is the first to be notified with the news. She immediately abandons her current case, a forger known as "the Herald", to search for Sarah. Her intuition tells her that Sarah had escaped to search for her boyfriend, Sean Moreau. El(Elizabeth) follows Sarah to Sean's Manhattan apartment, where she confronts Sarah again.
Sarah explains that Sean has disappeared, leaving behind only an empty music box, signifying their relationship is over. El takes Sarah back into custody, but not before Sarah gives El a valuable tip regarding the Herald: paper fiber El had found earlier had come from new Japanese currency. In return, Sarah asks for a meeting with El to discuss her future.
A week passes while El confirms the origin of the fiber, which are found to be from Japanese currency. El meets with Sarah in prison, and Sarah offers her expertise on El's case in exchange for her release from prison. El reluctantly accepts, on the condition that Sarah abandons her search for Sean and wears a tracking device. El also warns Sarah that if she runs, or if the Herald is not found, she will be sent back to prison with no further possibility of release.
After her release, Sarah heads for a local thrift shop, where she meets Helen, a wealthy elderly widow. Charmed by Sarah and her knowledge of her late daughter Vienna's boutique, Helen soon offers Sarah a loft in her mansion and gives her access to Vienna's wardrobe.
El later introduces Sarah to her team: Arnold, a young trainee agent who El trusts implicitly and Kyle, a Harvard graduate and loyal junior agent.
Present:
El's team quickly seizes antique books that were intended for the Herald. The unlikely duo realise that the Herald is using the paper from the books to counterfeit antique Spanish bonds, which could make him millions of dollars. Sarah notices a nearly-microscopic signature on the fake bonds: the initials C.H. aka. Colin Herald
Sarah and El visit Herald who easily recognises Sarah. After their meeting, El learns that Herald has booked a flight out of the country, which will leave in one week. Sarah and El know that Herald is likely operating out of a warehouse, but fail to get a warrant or sufficient probable cause to enter it. Sarah, desperate to stay out of prison and find Sean, knows that she must find a legal way to have Herald taken down. She takes off toward the warehouse, exiting the two-mile radius her tracking device allows her to stay within.
El is alerted that Sarah has bolted and believes that Sarah has run off in search of Sean; however, she tracks her to Herald's warehouse. With Sarah, a convicted felon, inside the warehouse, El now has probable cause to enter. She does, and discovers Herald running a massive counterfeiting operation and his men are taken into custody, and El remarks to Sarah that this is the third time Sarah has been caught.
